The Blackberry Boys By Richard McNail Jr

Filed under: Steve's Blog — dr steve @ 5:38 pm

Ok, this guy called our show (you’ll hear it 6/16/13) to plug his book by asking a question about anxiety. Of course, it was tongue in cheek and we get the joke, but the guy doesn’t have any comments or reviews on his Amazon page so I thought it would be fun if our listeners left a few “words of encouragement” and “serious questions” for him. The first sentence of the book says “There is no evidence of reality among this story…” so you know it has to be great!

Here’s the link!

Enjoy!

Avian Influenza A (H7N9) Virus

Filed under: H1N1 (Swine) Flu,H7N9 Avian Influenza — dr steve @ 1:46 pm

[This website is usually about “shits ‘n’ giggles” (literally, sometimes) but this is an important advisory from the CDC.  Things to do:

  • DON’T PANIC
  • Always wash your stupid hands before eating or after touching something nasty (including human hands)
  • DON’T PANIC
  • Don’t watch “Contagion” anytime soon

Help is on the way; these viruses are susceptible to drugs we already have (e.g., Tamiflu) and a vaccine is in the works for this crappy virus.  Below is the advisory from the CDC.]

On April 1, 2013, the World Health Organization (WHO) first reported 3 human infections with a new influenza A (H7N9) virus in China. Additional cases have been reported since.

At this time, no cases of H7N9 outside of China have been reported. The new H7N9 virus has not been detected in people or birds in the United States.

Most reported cases have severe respiratory illness and, in some cases, have died. According to WHO, no person-to-person spread of the H7N9 virus has been found at this time, and the reported cases are not linked to each other. An investigation by Chinese health authorities is ongoing to find out the source of these infections and detect any more cases.

This new H7N9 virus is an avian (bird) influenza (flu) virus. Human infections with avian influenza (AI, or “bird flu”) are rare but have occurred in the past, most commonly after exposure to infected poultry. However, this is the first time that this bird flu subtype (H7N9) has been found in people. This virus is very different from other H7N9 viruses previously found in birds.

This is a “novel” (non-human) virus and therefore has the potential to cause a pandemic if it were to change to become easily and sustainably spread from person-to-person. So far, this virus has not been determined to have that capability. However, influenza viruses constantly change and it’s possible this virus could gain that ability. CDC takes routine preparedness actions whenever a new virus with pandemic potential is identified, including developing a candidate vaccine virus to make a vaccine if it were to be needed. There is no licensed H7 vaccine available at this time.

CDC is following this situation closely and coordinating with domestic and international partners. In addition, CDC is:

  • Issuing guidance to U.S. clinicians and public health departments (http://emergency.cdc.gov/HAN/han00344.asp) on how to test for this virus.
  • Modifying test kits so that this specific virus can be easily and accurately identified
  • Reviewing genetic sequences of the virus to learn more about it
  • Gathering more information to make a more extensive assessment of the public health risk posed by this virus.

The sequences of the first three viruses were posted to GISAID (http://platform.gisaid.org/epi3/frontend#4195bc)  by China and are publicly available.  Some of the genetic changes have been associated with increased transmissibility of other AI viruses to mammals based on animal studies involving ferrets in the past. So far, all three viruses seem to be susceptible to the influenza antiviral drugs oseltamivir and zanamivir, but they are resistant to the adamantanes.

This is an evolving situation and there is still much to learn. CDC will provide updated information as it becomes available.  General information about avian influenza viruses and how they spread is available at Avian Influenza A Virus Infections in Humans (/flu/avianflu/avian-in-humans.htm) .

R.I.P. XM Jim

Filed under: Steve's Blog — dr steve @ 10:16 pm

We were given the very sad news that our friend XM Jim passed away today.

He always told me “this cancer isn’t going to get me, doc” and he was right; he died of a massive heart attack.

Jim was self-employed and had no life insurance; he leaves behind a wife and 3 kids, 2 of whom are 4 or under and one of whom has special needs. Beside the obvious emotional distress, they are so devastated financially that they’re asking the Veteran’s Administration for help with his burial.

If you can see it in your heart to donate to his family again, please click the “Donate” button below. If you can’t (and we understand) please send positive thoughts and prayers to his wife and family.

your friend,

Steve

Please Help @XMJim!

Filed under: Steve's Blog — dr steve @ 9:06 pm

Occasionally, I come to you, hat in hand, to help one of the friends of our show monetarily. Some of these promotions are more successful (Patrice O’Neal, Big A) than others (Blowhard), but you always come through. This time we really need your help.

A listener to our show (he’s @XMJim on Twitter, please follow him) was feeling crummy so he saw his doctor and came away with a diagnosis of pancreatic cancer. He’s been in the hospital and has now lost his job and has no income. Of course, his cancer treatments are going to cost a fortune, and if he can’t work…

Right now we just need to get him through the holidays. He and his family don’t know how they’re going to make it.

If you can donate $1, $5, $100, whatever you can handle, 100% of the donations will go to Jim and his family. If you can’t donate this year, no problem, everyone understands. Toss a little positive thinking his way (and follow him on Twitter!)

Y’all rule.

Steve

Dr Steve, Addadictome Todd and Dr D from the Throckmorton File answer awkward and strange medical questions. Topics include: nutsack skin tags, post cholecystectomy syndrome, steroid injections for migraines, Neil Armstrong, energy drinks, rabies, etc.

Also, the voting for Blowhard’s future on our show is almost over…if you have an opinion click here and vote!

Ok, ok, we give. YOU choose whether Blowhard stays or goes!

Filed under: Steve's Blog — dr steve @ 1:00 pm

I figured if we added the possibility of Brooklyn Blowhard being banned forever from our show that people would knock each other over to donate to his “sh!# eating grin” fund. I guess people really love him on the air, because the move to ban him forever has earned only $90 of the needed $600 to do the trick.

So I’m changing things up a bit.
If you want to ban The Brooklyn Blowhard forever, click here:

If you want us to keep him on the list of acceptable callers, click here:

At some point in the future we’ll tally the results and let you know YOUR decision.

As always, I remain,

yr obt svt,

Steve

Help us BAN “Brooklyn Blowhard” from Weird Medicine (and help a guy out)

Filed under: Steve's Blog — dr steve @ 9:33 pm

If you’ve been listening lately, our faithful listener “Brooklyn Blowhard” SWALLOWED HIS OWN TOOTH recently. He has no money, so he has been sifting through his own fecal matter for over two weeks trying to find it so his dentist can put it back in (it’s a cap, apparently, and Blowhard is not too proud to have a “shit eating grin”). Well, after two weeks he finally gave up and now he looks like a big, fat redneck with his missing “toof”.

We came up with a deal. Our listeners are very generous, but for Blowhard, they’re going to have to get something for their money. If the listeners will donate $600 to buy him a new crown, the BROOKLYN BLOWHARD will be banned from our show FOREVER. Click below to donate! Every penny will go to erasing this scourge on Saturday night radio for a very, very long time.

Thanks!

yr obt svt,

Steve

Please help Steve C’s Family!

We are all mourning the loss of our friend, Steve Carlesi, the former executive producer of the Opie and Anthony Channel. From a personal standpoint, Steve was the first person at XM202 who I ever corresponded with, and he ALWAYS answered my emails, no matter how trivial. He took the time to respond to a fan in the most gracious and humorous way; when I decided to pitch “Weird Medicine” to Opie I went to Steve first. His response: “I like it. A LOT. Let me see what I can do.” The rest is history, and I can say without any hesitation that without Steve there would have been no “Weird Medicine”. Whenever we were in NY, Steve always took the time to greet us and make us feel welcome. He was just a genuinely nice person.

So please help ameliorate this great loss to his family by donating to the Steve C Fund. Steve leaves behind a wife, 2 year old son, and a step-daughter who will all miss him greatly.

Thank you for your support! If you’d like to leave a message for Steve’s family, you can write to rememberstevec at gmail dot com. MJ can read these to Xander when he gets old enough to understand.

your obt svt,

Steve

Eat Fiber and Die: the MP3

Filed under: Steve's Blog — dr steve @ 4:45 pm

A couple of people asked me to actually post this awful song from my early days, cerca 1987.  I had just bought a multitrack recorder and a Korg DSS-1 sampling synthesizer.  I can’t sing so I whispered the words like a dope.

Ultimately, the chorus still makes me laugh: “Someone roll me a great big spliff; in return I’ll give you manual relief.”

More importantly, we now actually have a sponsor for the podcast.  Check out Adam & Eve by clicking HERE.  The cool thing is, if you use the offer code “FLUID” you’ll get 50% off one item, free shipping, and three free DVDs and maybe some other stuff.

Check it out!  It helps the show if you do, AND it will help your sad sex life become much more awesome.

as always, I remain,

yr obt svt
